Fashion commandments for the amateur stylist!

5 Fashion Commandments for the Amateur Stylist Of 2014

Think out of the box! Isn't that a phrase you have been sick and tired of hearing ever since you've ventured into the world of styling and fashion? Apart from the fact that you need to keep things unique and interesting every time you bag a styling assignment, there are several other important factors that are to be considered while newbie stylists try to make their way into the fashion industry. The five important fashion commandments are:

Know your client

The importance of knowing your client, their profession, body type, personality, personal sense of style etc. is extremely necessary. You will meet all kinds of clients for shoots or projects. Some of them will be musicians, actors, athletes, businessmen etc. You cannot style Vijay Mallaya the same way you style Salman khan right? So knowing your client well is an important step while styling them.

Pay attention to detail

Details are very crucial for an upcoming stylist. You will have to do your research on fittings, fabrics, garment construction, pricing etc. This can be done by comparing the things you already own with things you usually spot in stores while shopping or otherwise. You will notice the differences in cuts, designs and the brand’s trademark designs. A successful stylist needs to research well and know the difference between a Birkin and Prada without having to look at the tags.

Be updated

You have to stay updated with the latest runway trends and street style. Your clients approach you for because they want to look their stylish best. So you have to live up to those expectations. Read through fashion magazines or websites; attend fashion events that take place around you and keep yourself in the loop. Knowledge is always a priceless tool.

Networking

If you want to stay in this field for the long run you have to network and be nice to people. Who wouldn’t want to hire someone who is likeable and also known by many. So the key to getting there is lots of networking and building contacts.

Area of interest

Every stylist is supposed to be versatile and experienced in almost all fields. But it is important to figure out your area of interest such as magazines, photography assignments, celebrities, music or visual media etc. Pursue whatever you feel passionate about and know your strengths.
